From 24 to 26 February 2026, students from the Solar Energy and Ecology Institute and the Mzuzu University Faculty of Science, Technology and Innovation conducted an energy assessment exercise at Chintheche Health Center, Mzuzu Central Hospital, and Choma Health Center.
The exercise aimed at understanding the energy demand of the facilities, assessing the available solar energy backup systems, and consolidating data to inform proper energy planning and decision-making. The initiative seeks to ensure that existing solar systems in health facilities remain functional and efficient, while also engaging students in identifying and rectifying faults in broken solar installations.
This hands-on approach not only improves energy reliability in health facilities but also promotes practical skills development among students. By working directly with solar installations and conducting real assessments, the students gain valuable experience that supports both their academic learning and future careers in the renewable energy sector.
The initiative is supported by the SG Global Renewables Centre, which the Renewable Energy Industries Association of Malawi (REIAMA) is implementing with support from The Scottish Government through the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.
