On 10th March 2026, the Renewable Energy Industries Association of Malawi (REIAMA) convened a Member Consultation Meeting on Solar E-Waste Management at Sunrise Motel in Lilongwe. The meeting brought together REIAMA member companies, representatives from Lilongwe City Council, the REIAMA Secretariat, and the BSW Project Long-Term Expert for Malawi and Zambia to discuss a proposed pilot initiative aimed at improving the management of solar-related electronic waste in Malawi.
The discussions focused on identifying practical solutions for the collection, sorting, and responsible management of end-of-life solar products, as well as exploring opportunities for collaboration between the renewable energy private sector and local authorities.
Participants also exchanged experiences and perspectives on the growing need for structured systems to manage solar equipment that has reached the end of its lifecycle. As the adoption of solar technologies continues to expand across Malawi, effective e-waste management is becoming increasingly important to ensure environmental protection and long-term sustainability within the sector.
This initiative represents an important step toward strengthening sustainable solar e-waste management systems and supporting the continued growth of Malawi’s renewable energy sector.
