Safe E-Waste Disposal: Guiding Principles for Responsible Management
Safe E-Waste Disposal: Guiding Principles for Responsible Management
This REIAMA awareness resource provides practical guidance on the responsible management and disposal of electronic and electrical waste, with a particular focus on renewable-energy equipment such as solar panels, batteries, inverters, charge controllers and related components.
The guide outlines 11 practical principles for businesses, renewable-energy companies, installers and customers, covering e-waste identification, safe separation and storage, manufacturer take-back options, record keeping, authorised waste handlers, responsible procurement, installation-site clean-up and customer education.
It also highlights Malawi’s National E-waste Management Policy, launched in 2024, and the growing importance of responsible e-waste management and Extended Producer Responsibility.
Key message: E-waste should not be treated as ordinary rubbish. Responsible handling helps protect the environment, recover valuable materials and support a cleaner, more sustainable energy sector.
